Sigourney Weaver has already hinted that a new “Ghostbusters” film was on the way and now Harold Ramis has said that “Ghostbusters III” will start filming next year! Here is an excerpt:

Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future…GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.

Losing just three percent of its audience, “Avatar” raked in another $75 million in its second weekend to take the number one spot. James Cameron’s latest epic starring Sam Worthington has earned $212 million in the U.S. in TEN days.

Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” lost a little steam but still earned $65 million to take the number two spot. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the title character and Dr. Watson.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squakquel shocked box office experts by earning $50.2 million, well above predictions of the mid 30’s.

“It’s Complicated finished in fourth place with $22.1 million.

It looks like we’ll have a two movie race to the finish. James Cameron’s “Avatar” earned an estimated $24 million while Guy Ritchie’s “Avatar” earned $25 million. That puts both films on pace to earn over $70 million. Which do you think will come out on top?

Director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch) takes on the iconic character in his new film “Sherlock Holmes” starring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 2) as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. How does this updated take stand up?

The Good: “Sherlock Holmes” is a hoot. Guy Ritchie always delivers an entertaining film and this is no exception. Downey Jr. once again steals the screen with his hugely entertaining and energetic performance. I know this will probably draw some criticism, but I think he deserves every bit of his Golden Globe nomination for Best Acter in a Musical or Comedy. Once again, there is a perfect blend of humor, cleverness and heart in Downey Jr.’s performance to remind audiences again why he is such a great actor.

Law also portrays possibly my favorite version of Dr. Watson to hit the screen. Law gives one of his better performances and Dr. Watson is able to stand up on his own and not be completely overshadowed by Holmes.

While many people were worried about turning Holmes into an action hero, fear not. There is a perfect mix of action and the Holmes of old. True, we get to see Holmes and Watson take out numerous bad guys in extremely entertaining fashion, but that doesn’t meen Ritchie ditched Holmes’ roots. He’s still the same old genius crime solver people love. Also, the plot is very unpredictable. I’d wager that most people will not be able to guess the ending and will be kept engaged in the film because of that fact.

The Bad:

Rachel McAdams. Now, I love Rachel McAdams, and it’s not that she didn’t give a bad performance, her acting was quite entertaining actually, it’s just that her character was completely unneccessary. Take her character out and the film loses almost nothing. I understand the necessity to have a female lead, but I wish she would have had a more important role.

And, the plot might turn some people off. While it’s true that almost everyone won’t be able to guess the ending, that’s only because the plot is sometimes too convoluted. Things aren’t presented clear enough so that audiences are left wondering if the plot has any conprehensible direction to it. Still, Ritchie ties it up nicely in the end, but sometimes its the path to the result that counts.

The Final Word: While far from perfect, “Sherlock Holmes” is wildly entertaining and is well worth seeing. Thanks in large part to Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, “Sherlock Holmes” provides a good starting point for a potential franchise.

It’s Christmas weekend, and a battle is brewing. When “Alvin and the Chipmunks” was released in 2007, it got into a battle with “I Am Legend” with both films doing extremely well. It faces a similar battle with “Avatar” this weekend, starring Sam Worthington and “Sherlock Holmes” starring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 2), Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. Which film will come out on top?

Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” should be the easy choice, but James Cameron’s “Avatar” is getting a word of mouth unlike any other film I’ve seen in a while. This film is getting a lot of deserved praise and its $16 million a day box office this week bodes very well for the film this weekend. Look for another $59-62 million.

“Sherlock Holmes” should also make a big splash, thanks in large part to Robert Downey Jr.’s draw. An opening of $50-53 million should be in order.

As much as I hate to say it, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, should also make a big dent in the box office and earn about $49-52 million.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”, the follow up to 2007’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, got a hot start to the holiday box office week with an estimated $18.8 million. James Cameron’s “Avatar” continues to perform strongly, making another $16.4 million, raising its total to $126 million in just five days.

After a record opening weekend of over $77 million, “Avatar” continues to perform strongly making over $16 million on Monday and Tuesday. The film has made $109.5 million in just over five days.
